Carrie Underwood once took on an Ozzy Osbourne classic. In the wake of Osbourne’s last-ever show, fans have rediscovered Underwood’s 2023 performance of his 1991 track, “Mama, I’m Coming Home.”

Underwood sang the tune during an appearance on The Howard Stern Show. Before breaking into song, Underwood discussed discovering Osbourne as a teen.

“I very much remember being a teenager discovering my own musical tastes, and my mom being very much against me listening to Ozzy,” she recalled. “I was like, ‘I feel like you need to listen to some of these lyrics, ’cause it’s not all darkness.’ I was like, ‘There’s a lot of love songs and things that are a lot more melodic and sweet.’”

While it’s Underwood’s 2023 performance of the track that’s recently drawn attention, she actually released her “Mama, I’m Coming Home” cover the year prior. At the time, she called “Mama, I’m Coming Home” one of her “all-time favorite songs” in an Instagram post.

On The Howard Stern Show, Underwood spoke about getting permission from Osbourne and his wife, Sharon Osbourne, to take on the tune.

“Any time I’m gonna cover somebody I want their blessing. I would never want somebody to be like, ‘Man, I don’t like her.’ It’s worse if you sing the song and somebody asks them about that and they’re like, ‘What was that?!’ So I just want to be respectful,” Underwood said. “We asked permission and Sharon was very sweet about it.”

With that, Underwood began singing the track, blowing viewers away with her powerful voice and emotional take on the ballad.

Ozzy Osbourne’s Final Show

Underwood’s past performance found its way into the news cycle following the Back at the Beginning concert.

The Birmingham show marked Osbourne’s final live performance. It also reunited the singer, who’s battling Parkinson’s disease, with Black Sabbath for the first time in decades.

“It’s so good to be on this f**king stage, you have no idea,” Osbourne told the crowd during the show, later added, “I’ve been laid up for six years, and you’ve got no idea how I feel. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
