Megan Moroney Is “Not Okay” After Making Country Music History at the VMAs
Megan Moroney made country music history last night at the VMAs. Here’s her reaction to winning the first award for “Best Country” video.
This August, the VMAs announced that they would be adding a new category to their roster, exclusively for country artists. This followed the Grammys’ lead as they chose to add a second country category a few months prior. With mainstream music including country more, fans were excited to see who would take home the genre’s first VMA. Last night, amidst contenders like Chris Stapleton and Morgan Wallen, it was Megan Moroney who got to make history.
Hailing from Savannah, Georgia, Moroney first got noticed while performing at a sorority event by country singer Chase Rice. It was after the event that Rice invited her to come play with him at the Georgia Theatre, under the condition that she write an original song. Since then, the “emo cowgirl” has gained recognition for her vulnerable approach to songwriting, as well as songs like “Tennessee Orange”. This marks the singer’s first-ever VMA award, and the first VMA award to be won in the new category.
When asked how she felt about being at the VMAs for the first time, Moroney replied jokingly with, “I mean, I’m just kind of freaking out, um, I’m not okay.” She then admitted to those watching, “Guys, I actually fought over a moon man statue at white elephant last year at Christmas, and now I have a real one, so I’m freaking out.” She hilariously added, “This is way better than the Home Goods one.”
Moroney Starred and Directed in the Video for ‘Am I Okay?’
The singer took home the award for the music video for her song, “Am I Okay?” hence her puns. Moroney released the music video while the song was charting on the Billboard Top 40 last year. It became her second song to reach No. 1 on the charts, after the success of her song, “Tennessee Orange”.
The music video for the song was co-directed by Megan and Alexandra Gavillet and pokes fun at Megan’s dating life. It shows Moroney falling in love with the stereotypical finance bro, football player, and celebrity, all different guys you might run into in the dating scene.
Moroney said of directing the video, “I loved creating the concept for the video because it portrays what ‘Am I Okay?’ feels like to me. Finally meeting the one that makes all the wrong ones feel worth it. Maybe that’s real, or maybe it’s just a story I made up in my head. Guess we’ll never know!”
Other winners from the night included Alex Warren, Sabrina Carpenter, and Ariana Grande. Watch Megan perform her song “6 Months Later” live at the VMAs below.
