Harry Styles says “mum cried” when she first heard his new solo single

One Direction star Harry Styles released his debut single at the time – and he said his “mum cried” when he first played the new track to her.

Harry, from Holmes Chapel, says he’s taking it as a “good sign” that mum Anne was brought to tears when he gave her the first listen of his eagerly-anticipated debut album.

Speaking to Manchester’s Key 103 radio station, Harry said: “She cried a couple of times which was good, I think that was good.”

However not so good was the reaction of his stepdad – who Harry says confused his singing for a DUCK.

Harry said: “I had one piece of feedback from my stepdad, one of the songs on the album has a vocal effect in the background. And it finished and he went, “How did you get a duck in the studio?”

The story of Styles’ mother’s reaction has also sparked conversations about the role of family in artistic expression. For many creatives, family is both a source of inspiration and a sounding board for new ideas. In Styles’ case, his mother’s emotional response underscores the importance of authenticity in his work. “She knows me better than anyone,” he says. “If it touches her, I know I’m on the right track.”

In sharing this story, Styles reminded us all of the power of music to evoke emotion, foster connection, and tell stories that resonate across generations. It’s a reminder that behind every artist is a network of loved ones who have shaped and supported their journey—a sentiment that makes this revelation all the more touching.

If Styles’ mother’s reaction is any indication, this song is sure to be another masterpiece in his illustrious career. And for Harry Styles, it marks another step forward in his career as an artist who isn’t afraid to show emotion.
